Australia have become the latest nation to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with 11 of the 48 competing countries now known.
The Socceroos secured their place in next summer’s tournament thanks to a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
Needing a five-goal victory to qualify themselves, Saudi Arabia scored first through Abdulrahman Al Obud, but Australia turned it around thanks to goals from Connor Metcalfe and Mitchell Duke.
The Saudis now go into the next Asian qualifying round and can still qualify by finishing top of a three-nation group. They will face two of United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Indonesia, Iraq and Oman, who scored a 97th-minute penalty against Palestine in a 1-1 draw to knock them out of contention.
The three hosts – Canada, United States and Mexico – qualify automatically, while the other nations to have already qualified are Japan, New Zealand, Iran and Argentina, Uzbekistan, Jordan and South Korea.
Uzbekistan and Jordan will be playing at a World Cup finals for the first time.
