After the first two weeks of the NFL season, you have teams that are overperforming and underperforming. Which ones are flukes? Which ones signal a little something deeper?
Success and/or failure can be viewed as a mirage; it can also give clarity into advanced analytics, injuries, schedule strength, etc. Some teams are sitting at 2-0, while others are sitting at 0-2, with fan bases ready to hit the panic button. Relax, it’s still early unless you’re the Cincinnati Bengals, of course.
The Kansas City Chiefs sit as one of the more shocking teams that are 0-2. They have lost close games to both the Eagles and the Chargers. Some were wondering if defenses have figured out the schemes and unorthodox plays that the Chiefs run. I don’t believe this to be the case. If anything, this one is a fluke, and you can expect Patrick Mahomes to put this team on his back now and carry them into a deep playoff run at the bare minimum. Starting with the New York Giants this weekend.
The Buffalo Bills look unstoppable. When looking at the roster and arsenal of weapons, Josh Allen doesn’t even have a team close to what he has had in the past as far as weapons go, which is impressive. But whatever they’re doing, it is working, and working well. The Bills play the Miami Dolphins tonight, which could have Josh Allen spreading the ball all over the place and the game getting ugly early. The Bills are once again a preseason favorite for a Super Bowl run. This train may continue for a while.
The Indianapolis Colts are the team where sitting at 2-0 may be a fluke. They have been clicking as a unit, especially moving the ball down the field and scoring. Daniel Jones looks like a completely different quarterback than in years past. You may be wondering if Jones will revert to his old ways, but a new scheme and staff may be just what he needs to get his career on an upward trajectory.
The Green Bay Packers look like a legit Super Bowl contender sitting at 2-0, and should be 3-0 after playing the Cleveland Browns this weekend. Jordan Love and Josh Jacobs have been excellent, and I expect the Pack to have plenty of momentum to grab a wild-card spot in the NFC. Then make a run in the playoffs.
