West Ham ‘set to sign’ Callum Wilson as free agent

West Ham United have reached an agreement to sign Callum Wilson on a free transfer following the striker’s departure from Newcastle United, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Wilson, 33, has already completed a medical and is poised to put pen to paper on a heavily incentive-based one-year contract with the east London club.

The former England international — capped nine times by the Three Lions — left Newcastle on 30 June after the Magpies opted not to activate a clause to extend his contract. Though discussions were held over a new deal on revised terms, both parties ultimately failed to reach an agreement.

Wilson arrived at St James’ Park in the summer of 2020 from Bournemouth, reuniting with former Cherries manager Eddie Howe. During his four-year spell on Tyneside, the striker netted 49 goals in 130 appearances in all competitions, including a career-best 18 Premier League goals in the 2022–23 season.

However, injuries have plagued the latter stages of Wilson’s time at Newcastle. A back injury sustained in pre-season last July saw him miss the first 15 matches of the 2024–25 campaign. Though he returned to feature in four Premier League fixtures, a hamstring injury in December sidelined him once again for nearly two months. He ended the season with just one goal — against Birmingham City in the FA Cup — across 22 appearances.

At West Ham, Wilson will fill the void left by Michail Antonio, who exited the club in June at the end of his contract. With new manager Graham Potter looking to reshape his forward line, Wilson’s arrival offers both experience and a proven eye for goal — if he can remain fit.

The move marks a fresh chapter for Wilson as he seeks to re-establish himself in the Premier League and help spearhead the Hammers’ attack in the upcoming season.
