47 years after making their ODI World Cup debut, India finally clinched the trophy with a win over South Africa in the home conditions. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side defeated South Africa by 52 runs to lift an ICC title for the first time. India had suffered two heartbreaks bfore. They lost to Australia in the 2005 World Cup final. 12 years later, India lost to England in the final. India’s success in the 2017 WC revolutionised women’s cricket but the team remained trophyless for the next eight years.
Social media is flooded with wishes for India, who are now world champions. Virat Kohli also has reacted to India’s 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup win and shared a special post on Instagram. “The girls have created history and I couldn’t be more proud as an Indian to see the hard work of so many years come to life finally. They deserve all the applause and a big congratulations to Harman and the whole team for achieving this historic feat. Also congratulations to the whole squad and the management for the work behind the scenes. Well done India. Enjoy the moment to the fullest. This will inspire generations of girls to take up the sport in our country. Jai hind,” he wrote on Instagram.
Virat is himself a one-time ODI World Cup winner. He was part of the MS Dhoni-led team that won the 2011 World Cup at home. 13 years later, he was part of the Rohit Sharma-led squad that won the 2024 T20 World Cup. He also won the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Rohit Sharma gets emotional
Rohit Sharma, who led India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, was present on the field for the final. He got emotional after India’s win. The former India captain hasn’t won the ODI World Cup yet and is eyeing to win the title in 2027.
