The 2025 campaign will be Diego Pavia’s last, the Vanderbilt quarterback confirmed on social media Tuesday.
Last offseason, Pavia was granted a sixth year of eligibility after motioning for a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, arguing that the NCAA’s redshirt rule involving junior college eligibility violates antitrust law.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Pavia’s attorney said in a hearing in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on Tuesday that they would challenge the redshirt rule and ask for an injunction to grant Pavia a seventh year if the rules are not found to be subject to antitrust.
Though Pavia confirmed that he does not plan to play next season, Nakos confirmed that his attorney did state plans to stack on a challenge onto the redshirt rule.
Last November, Pavia filed a lawsuit arguing that rules that count junior college seasons towards NCAA eligibility violate antitrust law. He added that those rules prevent athletes from capitalizing on NIL opportunities.
In December, the NCAA granted a blanket waiver that allowed athletes who attended non-NCAA schools for at least one year to remain eligible in 2025-26 even if they had reached the eligibility limit.
That waiver paved the way for many athletes to play an additional season, including Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar.
Pavia spent two seasons at New Mexico Military Institute before transferring to New Mexico State for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He joined the Commodores in 2024.
Pavia has helped spark a resurgence for Vanderbilt—at least by the Commodores’ standards. They went 7-6 a season ago, upsetting Alabama and nearly doing the same to Texas.
Now, No. 20 Vanderbilt is 3-0 with key wins over Virginia Tech and then-No. 11 South Carolina. Pavia has thrown for 645 yards, seven touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
Though Pavia’s collegiate journey will come to an end after the 2025 season, he’ll look to prove that he has what it takes to play at the next level.
