Google to face trouble in UK

Google could face a major challenge in the United Kingdom due to an unfavourable scenario. According to UK’s antitrust watchdog, under the new regulations, Google will have to present the users with ‘choice screens’ when they use Chrome browser or Android mobile operating system.

This practice comes under the priority measures of the Competition and Markets Authority. The new digital regulations are focused on giving a boost to fair competition in the market of UK.

Google May Have To Give Choice Screen On Its Browser

The choice screen of Google will allow the users to select and switch between the search services. High chances are these will be other AI assistants. UK’s watchdog is looking to provide a strategic market status to Google under the new UK digital rules. With this, the watchdog will have the power to implement targeted measures and introduce new changes to specific aspects of Google Search operating in the country.

One of the Google officials said that the step could have multiple implications for businesses and consumers in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, Oliver Bethell, senior director of competition at Google, has also stated that the label could create a challenging environment for Google’s business in the country. The watchdog has to give the final decision on stamping Google with a label until October 13, 2025.

If the label comes into action then Google will be supposed to agree with two more things in place. The first one is that Google will have to make search results ranking and presentation fair and non-discriminatory.

Second thing is that publishers should have a choice along with transparency to know how their content is collected by Google to be used for AI services like AI Overviews and AI Mode. On a concluding note, things are going to get a little complicated for Google if the watchdog decides to go with using the label.
