Tonie Morgan grateful for opportunity to develop under Kenny Brooks

Georgia Amoore. Dazia Lawrence. Taylor Soule. Elizabeth Kitley. Regan Magarity. Those are just some of the players that Kenny Brooks has developed into professional-level basketball players during his coaching career. His ability to bring the best out of his players is undeniable. That’s why Tonie Morgan is so excited to play under him at Kentucky.

Morgan had a remarkable three-year run at Georgia Tech, where the talented guard played against Brooks and his Virginia Tech Hokies twice. As a Yellow Jacket, Morgan averaged 13.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The 5-foot-9 point guard was named to the All-ACC team twice.

Needless to say, Morgan has been a very, very good college player, but in her lone year at Kentucky, she’s looking to blossom into a WNBA-caliber star. Her previous encounters with Brooks set the table for her eventual commitment to Kentucky this offseason.

“He was an ACC coach, so I played him for two years, and then he recruited me a little bit out of high school,” Morgan said during Kentucky’s media day. “So, we’ve always known of each other, but my process out of the portal, I knew this was definitely a possible destination and I’m pretty happy with my choice. So, I’m happy that I’m here.”

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Morgan is in good hands. After all, Brooks is the guy that helped make Georgia Amoore into the superstar that she is today.

“I knew that Coach Brooks would prepare me to be a pro, and ultimately, that’s where I want to be,” Morgan added. “I’ve seen him do it with multiple guards before me. Of course, Georgia being the latest. Just knowing that he has a blueprint and just trust in his plan, I know that I’ll be able to make my dream come true.”

She’s grateful to be a Kentucky Wildcat — grateful to have the privilege to play for Kenny Brooks. Grateful beyond words, even.

“I don’t think I can put it into words. Coach Brooks is a great coach, even better guy. I don’t even know if I can put it into words. I’m just happy to be here.”
