- FEC observes minute silence in honour of Ogbe
From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja
President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), inaugurated Dakas Dakas as Chairman and Uchenna Eugene as Commissioner of the Nigeria Law Reform Commission.
The brief swearing-in ceremony took place in the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.
The Nigeria Law Reform Commission, tasked with reviewing and updating the nation’s legal framework, plays a crucial role in ensuring laws align with Nigeria’s evolving social, economic, and political landscape. The Commission also advises the Federal Government on legislative reforms that foster justice, fairness, and good governance.
In a solemn moment during the Council meeting, members observed a one-minute silence in memory of Audu Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 78.
Meanwhile, Dakas reiterated the Commission’s commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s legal framework by reforming and deleting obsolete laws that no longer serve the country’s needs.
Speaking to State House Correspondents after his inauguration, he said, “We will be deliberate about identifying and proposing for reform some of the very obsolete laws that we have. It will interest you to know that quite a number of our laws date back to the colonial era, and very many of them are still on the statute books. Many of them are not fit for purpose.”
He assured Nigerians that the Commission’s work will focus on removing such outdated legislation to ensure the legal system reflects contemporary social, economic, and political realities. Prof. Dakas added that this reform agenda will be pursued in close collaboration with the National Assembly and the executive branch, aiming to inspire renewed confidence in Nigeria’s laws and governance.
“Our goal is not just to amend but to actively delete laws that hinder progress and no longer align with the nation’s aspirations,” he affirmed, promising a more responsive and modern legal system for all Nigerians.
