President Bola Tinubu has described Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka as a “massive source of inspiration” to Nigerians and generations of writers worldwide, as the renowned literary icon marks his 91st birthday.
In a congratulatory message on Sunday, July 13, issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Soyinka’s lifelong commitment to literature, activism, and nation-building, emphasising the global impact of his creative works and public service.
“Professor Soyinka is an uncommon patriot who has continued to demonstrate his undying love for our country. Even at this grand old age, he continues to be a source of inspiration to fellow citizens and people around the world,” Tinubu said.
The president highlighted Soyinka’s trailblazing achievement as the first African to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, noting his pivotal role in education, pro-democracy and human rights movements, cultural diplomacy, and the shaping of Nigeria’s national identity.
Tinubu also reflected on his personal association and collaborations with Soyinka, expressing gratitude for the literary giant’s decades of service to Nigeria and humanity.
“I value my association with Professor Soyinka and several collaborations to advance the progress and development of Nigeria,” he stated.
As Soyinka embarks on what Tinubu called “the last decade of his centennial,” the president wished him continued good health and more years “in sound mind,” underscoring the enduring relevance of Soyinka’s voice and vision.
Soyinka, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential writers and public intellectuals, is celebrated for his prolific output across drama, poetry, memoir, and essays, as well as his steadfast advocacy for justice and freedom.
