How did Houston Texans defensive tackle Tommy Togiai find out he was making the active roster?
Like most people: social media.
“I found out when I saw (the post), saw it on everything, and saw my name on that D-line list,” Togiai said on Wednesday following roster cuts. “I was just thanking God, cause that’s all I could do.”
Togiai, perhaps the Texans‘ most consistent defensive lineman throughout training camp, caught Houston’s attention after joining the team’s practice squad. He then played his way onto the active roster for three games, incuding serving as a depth piece in the postseason.
But practice squad names are sure-fire locks to make the active roster, even if they finish the year prior on staff. He needed a promising summer to promise a spot on the squad for Week 1.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans mentioned on more than one occasion that Togiai was one of the more impressive players on defense. That carried weight in finalizing the active roster.
“Tommy is an NFL football player,” Texans general manager Nick Caserio said. “He’s got the right mindset. He’s got the right attitude. He works his tail off. He goes out there and makes plays. He’s been really good to work with. He’s taken advantage of the opportunities when they’ve been provided. We’re glad he’s here.”
Togiai and the Texans kickstart the 2025 NFL season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
