Taraba assembly denies plans to impeach deputy governor

    From Sylvanus Viashima, Jalingo

The Taraba State House of Assembly on Thursday, June 26, stated that there are no plans to impeach the state deputy governor, Alhaji Aminu Alkali.

Mr Nelson Len, the chairman of the Taraba State House of Assembly Committee on Information, disclosed this at a press briefing in Jalingo on Thursday, amidst reports of plans to impeach the deputy governor following his protracted illness.

Len said that the deputy governor is recuperating and undergoing physiotherapy in Abuja.

He said that the constitution is clear on the process of removing elected officials, and the process has not been activated since the deputy governor has not been confirmed incapacitated.

The member representing Nguroje State Constituency said that the information circulating is baseless and that the state governor, Agbu Kefas, is focused on bringing development to the people rather than thinking of a replacement for his deputy, who is ill and recuperating.

“Let me tell you for free that there is no move whatsoever to impeach the deputy governor for now. Let me also tell you that the deputy governor is fully on the ground in Nigeria. He left Jalingo just a few days ago to continue with his physiotherapy.

“As we speak, the governor is concentrating efforts to ensure the quick recovery of the deputy governor and is not, in any way, trying to initiate the process of his impeachment. The House of Assembly has not received any such notice either.

“I would advise that we focus more energy on praying for his quick recovery rather than making statements that could potentially incite agitations among groups. The state governor is actively providing dividends of democracy to the people, and there is no vacuum of any kind,” he said.
