‘Talk whatever you want in press conferences’: Jadeja shrugs off England coach’s claim of ‘finding ways’ to win Edgbaston Test | Cricket News

After a second day of domination on the field in the second Test at Edgbaston, India gave hosts England a real scare by snapping three quick wickets on the back of their first-innings 587. Powered by two gritty stands between captain Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, India racked up their highest score in England in 18 years, the total being the highest conceded by England in the three years under the leadership of head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.

India responded with three quick wickets, dismissing the England top-order comprising Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope within the first overs after a fine burst from seamers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj. Despite being pushed back by the visitors in a match that is seemingly heading towards a probable draw, England assistant coach Jeetan Patel said that the Bazballers will attempt to analyse and find ways to win the contest.

“100 per cent. I’ve said this many a time in front of all of you, and you keep laughing at me! We will go back in there and have a quick chat about how the day has gone, and what we might look forward to tomorrow. It’s about getting some rest in some guys, some shut-eye, and coming back fresh tomorrow,” Patel told reporters after Day 2’s play.

“We will find another way of trying to get over the line. That’s the beauty of the team we have, the players we have and the belief they have. There are three days of cricket left, lots of cricket to go and on a fast scoring ground you never know what can happen,” the Kiwi added.

England moved to stumps at 77 for three with Joe Root and Harry Brook unbeaten at the crease, trailing India by 510 runs.

“We have two of the greatest batters in the world at the crease now, hopefully they get back in tomorrow and nestle in and cash in on what could be a good day’s cricket,” the former New Zealand off-spinner remarked.

    ‘Talk whatever you want’

However, India all-rounder Jadeja, who chipped in with a valuable 89 during his 203-run stand with Gill for the sixth wicket, brushed aside Patel’s claims and said it was the performance on the field in the forthcoming days that matters.

“In press conference, you can talk whatever you want to talk. That’s none of my business. But, at the end of the day, you have to go out there and perform and take those 20 wickets. That’s all that matters,” Jadeja told in response to Patel’s claim.

After Jadeja’s dismissal, India went onto add 173 runs with captain Gill recording a career-best 269. India will, however, be mindful of England’s propensity to make strong comebacks with the bat, after having recorded their highest-ever chase (378) at the ground in their last meeting here in 2022.
