The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Kwara State Governor and elder statesman, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, who died on Wednesday, June 25, in Abuja at the age of 84.

In a joint statement released to the press, the SMBLF described Adebayo as a true patriot, a detribalised Nigerian, and a devoted public servant whose life was marked by unwavering dedication to good governance, national unity, and the service of humanity.

The statement was co-signed by key leaders of the regional forum: Oba Oladipo Olaitan of Afenifere, Dr Bitrus Pogu of the Middle Belt Forum, Senator John Azuta-Mbata representing Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and Ambassador Godswill Igali for the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

“Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum announces with a deep sense of loss and gratitude for a life well lived, the transition to glory of one of our most revered leaders and former Governor of the old Kwara State, His Excellency, Chief Cornelius Adebayo,” the statement read.

Describing him as a committed Awoist and a trusted political figure, the group recalled Adebayo’s contributions both as Governor of old Kwara State and later as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They also highlighted his national service as Minister of Communications during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, a role in which he served with “the highest level of patriotism.”

Fondly referred to as “C.O.” by close associates, Adebayo was known for his integrity, humility, and consistent alignment with progressive ideals. He was a long-standing ally of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and an active leader within Afenifere and other regional organisations that make up the SMBLF coalition.

The statement emphasised that Adebayo’s political philosophy was grounded in equity, justice, and national integration, values he upheld until his last days. “Chief Adebayo was a dependable bridge-builder between Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and political groups,” the group noted, adding that his life’s work will continue to inspire future generations.

The SMBLF leaders extended their condolences to Adebayo’s family, the government and people of Kwara State, and all Nigerians mourning the loss of a true statesman. They also urged political leaders across the country to emulate his example of selfless leadership and unwavering patriotism.

As the nation reflects on his legacy, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum reaffirmed their commitment to the ideals that Adebayo championed: unity in diversity, true federalism, and inclusive governance.

“Though Chief Cornelius Adebayo has departed, his legacy of service, courage, and integrity remains etched in the fabric of our national history,” the statement concluded.
