Abuja – The chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, Senator Bassey Aniekan, has appealed for calm and restraint following the circulation of a video showing a protest in Ghana where some citizens reportedly called for the deportation of Nigerians.
Reacting to the footage, Aniekan condemned the protest and the negative portrayal of Nigerians, stating, “The widespread indignation against Nigerians living in Ghana and branding them as criminals should be condemned by all.”
He emphasised that Nigerians are largely law-abiding and industrious, adding, “While not denying the fact that there may be some bad individuals amongst them, the generality of Nigerians are peaceful and law-abiding people.”
Highlighting the historical ties between both nations, Aniekan called for peaceful coexistence and adherence to ECOWAS principles. “Ghana and Nigeria are brothers and in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace. Dialogue has proven countless times to be a tool for peace and should be deployed,” he stated.
The lawmaker confirmed that the situation is being addressed diplomatically, noting that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, is actively engaging Ghanaian authorities. He also praised the efforts of both countries’ High Commissions in managing the situation.
He cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, warning that such language could worsen tensions, while urging Nigerians in Ghana not to retaliate. “Avoid provocation of any sort and resist reprisal attacks as the issue is being handled,” the senator said.
Aniekan dismissed online claims that Nigerians’ shops and properties were being destroyed in Ghana, saying, “There is no evidence to buttress such claims.”
The Senate committee assured Nigerians that it is closely monitoring the matter and will support all diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad.
