Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested an armed robbery gang leader, Inima Sunday Akpan, from Abak Itiat Ikwuk in Ini Local Government Area of the state.
A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Timfon John, and made available to journalists in Uyo at the weekend said the suspect was arrested in a hideout at Ibiaku village near Uyo City Polytechnic, where he was hiding from security operatives for involvement in various robbery incidents.
John said the suspect was responsible for multiple robbery cases in Ikot Otor, Ikot Uboh, and Ikot Osurua communities in Ikot Ekpene council area before he went into hiding.
The statement reads in part:
“On Thursday, August 14, 2025, at approximately 7:00 PM, operatives of the Command successfully arrested a suspected notorious cultist and armed robbery suspect who has been terrorising residents of Ikot Ekpene and surrounding areas.
“Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Command apprehended the suspect, one Inima Sunday Akpan, a male from Abak Itiat Ikwuk Village in Ini Local Government Area, who had been in hiding in Ibiaku Village near Uyo City Polytechnic.
“Akpan has a history of involvement in multiple armed robbery cases, including recent incidents in Ikot Otor, Ikot Uboh, and Ikot Osurua, where a lawyer (name withheld) was shot and several others were injured. Other members of his gang have already been apprehended.”
John said stolen property was recovered from the suspect’s hideout, including one Daylong motorcycle, which was originally painted red but later repainted black.
She said other items found were one 32-inch television, one LG home theatre/sound system, one amplifier, and a mattress.
“A search of Akpan’s hideout at the time of his arrest yielded several items suspected to be stolen, including: one new Daylong motorcycle (originally red, repainted black), one 32-inch Itec television, one LG home theatre/sound system, one amplifier, and one foam.
Timfon explained that the suspect admitted to the crime after interrogation, adding that investigation has commenced.
“During interrogation, Akpan confessed to the crimes. Investigation is ongoing.”
