Operation Fansan Yamma records major gains as COAS reassures troops during eid-el-Adha celebration

    By Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto

The Nigerian Army has announced significant gains in its campaign against banditry in the North-West, particularly under the banner of Operation Fansan Yamma, as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede

reaffirmed the military’s commitment to defeating all remaining armed criminal groups in the region.

The COAS who was represented by the Commander Cyber Warfare Command, Major General Adeleke Ayannuga while speaking during a special Eid-el-Adha lunch with troops of Operation Fansan Yamma on Friday in Sokoto, praised the efforts of the soldiers emphasising the progress made over the past year in restoring peace and security to affected communities.

He said In the last one year, Operation Fansan Yamma has been doing exceedingly well, adding that the high morale of their troops and lower casualty rates among personnel are indicators of success.

He explained that while public perception of military success may focus on visible changes, the Army uses more tactical metrics such as the number of enemy casualties, dismantled hideouts, foiled attacks, and territory reclaimed from criminal control.

“What we in the military use as our metrics for measuring success is often different from public expectations. Casualties inflicted on the bandits, settlements dislodged, and foiled attacks are some of our key indicators.”

According to him, the operation has not only neutralized dozens of bandits but has also led to the liberation of occupied communities, a drop in military casualties, and the re-establishment of state authority in formerly ungoverned areas.

The Army Chief used the Eid occasion to commend the troops’ loyalty, courage, discipline, and selfless service, describing the celebration as a time to reflect on values that define the Nigerian Army.

“It gives me great pleasure to be with you today as we mark this significant occasion that symbolizes sacrifice, devotion, and unity. Your consistent display of commitment to protecting our nation is deeply appreciated, and your sacrifices are not in vain.”

He reaffirmed that the troops welfare remains a top priority for the Nigerian Army, and pledged continued provision of combat enablers, logistics, and morale-boosting initiatives.

The COAS noted that events such as the Eid-el-Adha lunch are more than symbolic, stressing their importance in fostering unity and boosting morale among troops.

In his welcome address the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Ibikunle Ajose described the COAS’s visit as “deeply inspiring and symbolic,” adding that it came at a time when troops were intensifying efforts to restore peace and normalcy within the region.

He assured the Army Chief of the unwavering dedication of troops to the COAS’s Command Philosophy, which emphasizes sound administration and the transformation of the Army into a well-motivated and combat-ready force.

He highlighted the successful sanitization of the once dreaded Funtua-Gusau-Sokoto highway, now deemed safe for travel due to sustained military operations and improved security across several communities previously plagued by violent attacks as part of the recent achievements of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

The commander further praised the resilience and discipline of the troops, acknowledging their sacrifices and bravery on the battlefield. He paid tribute to fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation and expressed gratitude to those wounded in action, assuring them of the Army’s continued support for their recovery and welfare.
