From Jude Chinedu, Enugu
Nzuko Umunna, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a founding member, Dr Chris Chigoziri Asoluka, fondly known as Okwuruoha.
In a tribute jointly signed by its President, Prof Chinedu Nebo, and Secretary, Dr Uju Agomoh, the group described Asoluka as “a visionary member, a colossus who has left an indelible mark in the Southeast and Nigeria in general.”
According to the statement, “Chris was dependable and always ready to serve at any request for service. He stood with us during the foundation days of Nzuko Umunna. He made the list of the first fifty pioneer resourceful Ndi Igbo to join this noble organisation (p. 19, Nzuko Umunna Chronicles). This alone showed his desire for change amongst his kinsmen. During those days, his contributions assisted in the actualisation of several projects and programmes.”
Describing his passing as a monumental loss, the group said, “The great Iroko has indeed fallen, and the eagle has soared to eternal skies, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and truth.”
The statement further praised Asoluka’s commitment to regional unity and progress: “His selfless dedication to the pursuit of a united and prosperous Southeast has earned him an eternal place in the annals of our nation’s history. We mourn a man whose desire is to leave a legacy for generations to come.”
Nzuko Umunna recalled Asoluka’s inspiring words on legacy, quoting him as saying, “Leaving a legacy is about more than passing on physical assets – it’s a tapestry of wisdom, values, and contributions that spans generations. Creating a lasting legacy influences the lives of your children, grandchildren, and beyond.”
The group described him as “a remarkable technocrat, a shining example of integrity, wisdom, and compassion. His passing leaves a gaping void, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Expressing solidarity with his family and associates, the statement concluded: “Nzuko Umunna extends our deepest condolences to Dr Chris Asoluka’s family, friends, associates, Southeast, and the nation. We pray that his legacy continues to inspire future generations. May his soul rest in peace.”
