A new era has kicked off in Indian cricket with the appointment of new leaders in the ODI format. Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t considered for a place in the leadership group and Shreyas Iyer has become the new vice-captain of the ODI team. The right-handed batsman has been part of the leadership group in white-ball cricket, but on a stand-in basis. Iyer will now assist Shubman in 50-over cricket going ahead. He is presently leading the India A cricket team in the unofficial one-day series against Australia A.
Iyer has enjoyed huge success on the captaincy front in IPL and has finally been rewarded. He kicked off his IPL captaincy career with Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2018. He propelled DC to the second round in IPL 2019. DC played their first IPL final in 2020.
An injury ruled Iyer out of the first half of IPL 2021. He played under Rishabh Pant during the second half. Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2022 and 2024. Iyer-led KKR ended their 10-year title drought and defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final to clinch the trophy for the third time.
Iyer continued his purple patch on the captaincy front and captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final of IPL 2025. PBKS lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final.
Iyer couldn’t force his way back into the T20I squad but has been rewarded with vice-captaincy in ODIs. Iyer, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in December 2017, has 2845 runs in 65 innings. He has an average of 48.22.
Iyer played a key role in India’s success in the 2023 ODI World Cup and scored 530 runs in 11 innings. He batted at an average of 66.25. Iyer scored 243 runs in 5 matches in the Champions Trophy. He was India’s highest run-scorer in the ICC event.
