Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar praised Jasprit Bumrah for taking a fifer against England at Leeds on Sunday while also subtly pointing out India’s missed chances on the field. While Bumrah’s fifer helped India bowl out England for 465, the score might have been even less had India taken all their catching chances on the field.

Off Bumrah’s bowling alone, India dropped 4 catches, three by Yashasvi Jaiswal and one by Ravindra Jadeja with Harry Brook getting reprieve twice, once on 46 and then on 82. The England batter would fail to reach three figures, getting caught by Shardul Thakur off Prasidh Krishna on 99, but he had already done enough damage to India by the time he walked back.

“Congratulations Bumrah! A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and 𝙣𝙖𝙪 wickets,” Tendulkar posted on X.

By taking the five-fer at Leeds, Bumrah drew level with the legendary Kapil Dev to become the Indian players with the joint-most five wicket hauls in away Tests.

Bumrah has taken 12 fifers, the same as Dev but did it in 34 Test matches as compared to 66 matches by the former India World Cup winning captain. They are followed by Ishant Sharma who has taken 9 fifers in 63 matches, Zaheer Khan who has 8 in 54 matches and Irafan Pathan who has 7 in 15 matches.

Bumrah accounted for the wickets of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue as India bundled out England for 465, still maintaining a lead of 6 runs.

Before Bumrah castled Josh Tongue to end England innings, Chris Woakes (38 off 55) punished a predictable Indian pace attack to take his team close to India’s 471. England’s tail virtually cancelled out the Indian first innings with the match now hinged on third and fourth innings respectively.

Hosts continued to find the boundaries at will as they collected 138 runs in 23.4 overs in the afternoon session with the loss of five wickets.

Prasidh removed Jamie Smith (40 off 52) and Brook with the short ball but leaked too many runs at the same time with his one dimensional tactic, conceding 128 runs in 20 overs.
