Big news for those with good taste: a new Lena Dunham-helmed romantic comedy, Good Sex, is currently filming in New York City. In the movie, Natalie Portman portrays a therapist who finds herself in an age-gap love triangle with two men: one in his 50s (played by Mark Ruffalo) and one in his 20s (played by Tucker Pillsbury, who is best known by his pop-musician moniker, Role Model).
As has become unfortunately routine for yet-to-be-released films, the internet is already rife with myriad paparazzi photos that show the Good Sex cast and crew in the midst of production. In a series of shots taken on Monday, a frenzied-looking Portman can be seen on the sidewalk outside of a Manhattan apartment building, clad in what appears to be a thrown-together ensemble: breezy khaki trench, white tank, blue-and-white striped boxers, and Gucci horsebit loafers with white socks. Like her shoes, her accessories—a Jacquemus handbag and a Harry Styles-coded Sotheby’s baseball hat—read as conspicuously moneyed.

Based on the ensemble alone, Portman’s character looks like she could be a well-to-do mom on school drop-off duty at the elite private school Avenues in Chelsea…or a menswear-centric TikTok creator on the hunt for cream-top matcha latte in Silver Lake. (Might her character have pilfered the boxers off of her younger, “Sally”-singing paramour?) Indeed, the look bears a not-insignificant resemblance to an outfit that Paul Mescal wore at a Gucci runway show last summer.
Born during the comfort-first era of the pandemic, the boxers-as-shorts trend has since been perfected by stylish women—Portman now among them. A little old money, a little lascivious, the boxers trend has given way to a full-blown frat-boy prep fashion revival.
Elsewhere in the film, Portman can also be seen wearing other menswear-coded garms like dad sneakers, whiskered blue jeans, and a vintage tee commemorating the Cure’s 1992 Wish tour. Anyways, can’t wait to see whatever crop tops Role Model’s character will inevitably have on.
