Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) under the leadership of Uchenna Madu has called on President Bola Tinubu to  release the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu June 12, the nation’s Democracy Day.

In a statement signed by Madu, MASSOB said releasing Kanu would align with democratic principles and the rule of law.

Again, MASSOB said its call for Kanu’s release is in tandem with the longstanding demand for the IPOB leader’s release among various groups advocating for the rights of the Igbo people and self-determination in the southeastern region of Nigeria, and others.

MASSOB said her call was equally rooted in the fact that freeing Kanu would promote national unity and cohesion.

“MASSOB believes that Kanu’s release will contribute to national healing and unity within the country, fostering better relations between different ethnic groups and the federal government.

“Since we emphasize the need to respect human rights and due process, releasing Kanu would align with democratic principles and the rule of law.

“MASSOB believes that releasing Kanu will pave the way for dialogue aimed at addressing the grievances of the southeastern region, which is marked by calls for self-determination and greater autonomy.

“This call from MASSOB coincides with significant historical anniversary of June 12 in Nigeria, invoking the spirit of democracy and the values that underpin it—freedom, justice, and equity. It should not be over looked.

“Kanu’s release will reflect the aspirations of many individuals and groups in Igbo land, Nigeria and globally who continue to advocate for his release, and see it as a critical step toward addressing broader political and social issues.”

MASSOB said releasing Kanu point in time, will shape future relationship between the government various ethnic groups in the country.
