Kolkata Rain: Kolkata is in for a few more days of stormy skies and thundery showers before the rainclouds begin to ease. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms with gusty winds for the city until the weekend, after which the weather is likely to take a calmer turn.
On Tuesday, 24 September, the city recorded thunderstorms with rain but no significant warnings were issued. The maximum temperature hovered around 31.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 25.6 degrees Celsius. Light showers of about 4 mm were recorded, keeping the humidity level high at nearly 94% in the morning.
Kolkata Weather Forecast: IMD Warns of Thunderstorms with Gusty Winds
For the next three days, 25–28 September, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, occasionally reaching speeds of 30–50 kmph. These spells of rain are expected to occur under generally cloudy skies and could disrupt normal life with sudden downpours, waterlogging, and slower traffic movement.
The weather office has particularly flagged 25–28 September for possible intense thunderstorms, advising residents to stay alert and avoid venturing out during lightning activity.
Relief in Sight from 29 September
The good news for Kolkatans is that the weather may start easing from 29 September onwards. While isolated thunderstorms are still expected on 29 and 30 September, the IMD has not issued any warnings for these days, suggesting that the intensity of rain will taper off.
What This Means for Residents
- Expect thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds through the week.
- Waterlogging and traffic disruptions may occur during peak hours.
- Weather is likely to improve after 28 September, giving the city a much-needed break from the wet spell.
As the Durga Puja season inches closer, the short break in rain will come as a welcome relief for pandal preparations and festive shoppers across the city.
