Strapping into the fiery boots of the Human Torch in The Fantastic Four: First Steps might represent the biggest role yet for Joseph Quinn, but he’s already dressing the part. At a Berlin screening of the film earlier this month, Quinn showed out in typically impeccable fashion. His watch, though, is what really caught our eye: a vintage Sixties model from Glashütte Original—the once-dormant German watchmaker founded in 1845—a brand you don’t often see in the wild, let alone on an A-lister’s wrist.
This particular model serves as an apt nod to the ’60s milieu of the film, explains Fabio Immediato, Quinn’s stylist. According to Immediato, the actor gravitated towards the Glashütte’s classic leather strap and vintage face, era-appropriate flourishes that contrasted pleasantly with his red-carpet wardrobe’s contemporary-leaning flourishes. (At the Warfare premieres in Los Angeles, Quinn wore a similarly elegant Omega De Ville Prestige Co-Axial Master Chronometer, another old-school classic with Roman numeral markers.)
For watch writer Thomas Brechtel, Quinn’s vintage Glashütte is a particularly special watch; he received one from his uncle Paul after his family was reunited following a period of separation in the wake of World War II. “I guess only people with a link to the East German history wear it, know it, and like it,” Brechtel says. It’s unusual to see one at all—let alone on the red carpet.
Looking for a similar version you can buy brand new? Christian Schmidt of Mr Nice Watch would point you towards the Glashütte Original Sixties, a retro-leaning dress watch that “embodies the traditional watchmaking craftsmanship of this tiny location in the East of Germany.”
For Schmidt, the real highlight of the watch is its domed dial and retro typography, reminiscent of the dress watches of—you guessed it—the ’60s. “It is posh and very individualistic,” adds Brechtel. “A special watch for special moments.” In other words, the ideal watch to mark the moment that, say, Joseph Quinn officially entered the pantheon of MCU superstars.
