Harry Styles can add another line to his already ridiculous CV: sub-three-hour marathon runner. Yesterday, the English singer popped up, as he has been wont to do, at the Berlin Marathon and crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 59 minutes, and 13 seconds—about 25 minutes faster than his previous PR. Madness.
For those who don’t know, the Berlin track is famous for its ultra-flat, lightning-quick route, and Styles was one of roughly 55,000 people who pounded the pavement in the German capital on Sunday. To fly under the radar, the pop star reportedly signed up under the name “Sted Sarandos,” as a riff on Ted Sarandos, the CEO of Netflix. A solid alias, sure, if a wee bit Bond villain-y.
Running 26.2 miles in under three hours takes endless pasta dinners, too many gels to count, and a solid pair of shoes. For the race, the 31-year-old Styles laced up the Nike Alphafly 3—the sneaker giant’s turbo-charged marathon machine. They’ve got a carbon fibre plate that slingshots you forward, two Air Zoom pods that basically work like pogo sticks under your feet, and a beefy slab of ZoomX foam to keep things bouncy. In fact, they’re actually the same silhouette that he wore for the Tokyo Marathon earlier this year, just in a spicier ‘Bright Crimson’ colorway.
Breaking three hours is a big deal in the marathon world. It’s the benchmark that says: yes, you’ve trained properly. Yes, you’ve slogged through long runs in the rain. And yes, you’ve got the right kit. It means Styles isn’t just dabbling—he’s about that life.
So, looks like Harry Styles is taking his marathon side quest very seriously. And if you fancy giving it a go, all it takes are some $295 Nikes, months of training, and the ability to run like your life depends on it. Good luck.
