The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has announced the Federal Government’s plan to build a super power grid for Nigeria, backed by a $18.2 billion loan approved by the National Assembly on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
He made the disclosure during the commissioning of a 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substation at the Eleyele Transmission Substation in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, July 24, 2025. The project, implemented under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) by the FGN Power Company in collaboration with Siemens Energy, aims to modernise Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
Adelabu stated that the super grid project goes beyond repairing the existing national grid, which has suffered from years of neglect and has become old, dilapidated, and ineffective.
“Just yesterday, at the National Assembly, a $18.2 billion loan was approved to ensure we install what we call a super grid. Let’s give our legislators a round of applause,” he said.
“A super grid is an alternative grid. It’s a backup grid. It’s a failover grid,” Adelabu explained, noting that Nigeria currently relies on a single grid, which causes widespread outages when bottlenecks occur.
“With a backup and failover grid, we can redirect the movement of energy from the main grid to the backup grid,” he added.
Adelabu assured Nigerians that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is committed to ensuring the super grid comes to fruition.
On the commissioning, he said, “This new substation will significantly improve the transmission wheeling capacity by 50.4MW, directly benefiting households and businesses in Eleyele and its environs. The mobile substation at Eleyele has enabled the radiation of more feeders to Apete, Ologun-Eru, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Sango, and Bodija, fostering opportunities for new businesses to emerge in Eleyele due to the improved electricity supply.”
The Managing Director of FGN Power Company, Mr Kenny Anuwe, stated that the state-of-the-art mobile substation provides innovative solutions to Nigeria’s power challenges.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Francis Agoha, represented by the company’s Head of Technical Services, Folasade Sanya, described the new substation as a significant leap forward for Nigeria’s power sector.
The Alawotan of Awotan, Oba Dauda Omotosho, thanked President Tinubu and the Minister of Power for the project and appealed to IBEDC to ensure the availability of prepaid meters for beneficiaries and a regular power supply.
