The Delhi government has initiated a significant redevelopment project for the Mahatma Gandhi Ring Road, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion along its 55-kilometre stretch. The Public Works Department (PWD) has appointed AECOM India Pvt. Ltd to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) that will guide the transformation of this critical transport artery.
Phased Approach to Redevelopment
The project will be executed in six phases, targeting key junctions to enhance connectivity between north, south, and central Delhi. PWD minister Parvesh Verma emphasised that this initiative will modernise the road through data-driven and environmentally-conscious planning.
The DPR, which is expected to be completed within 24 weeks, will include comprehensive studies on traffic, environmental impact, and structural integrity.
Addressing Urban Challenges
Designed to facilitate smooth traffic movement, the Mahatma Gandhi Ring Road has faced increasing congestion due to rapid urbanisation and a significant rise in vehicle numbers.
This redevelopment aims to decongest major intersections, improve traffic flow, and reduce air and noise pollution. Elevated corridors will be constructed over the existing road to promote sustainable urban transport.
Six Key Phases of Project
– Azadpur Flyover to Hanuman Temple (ISBT) – 9.5 km
– Chandgi Ram Akhara to Majnu Ka Tilla – 2.5 km
– Hanuman Temple (ISBT) to DND Flyover – 11.5 km
– DND Flyover to Moti Bagh Metro Station – 10.5 km
– Moti Bagh Metro Station to Rajouri Garden – 10 km
– Rajouri Garden to Pacific Mall, Pitampura, and Azadpur Flyover – 13.5 km
Verma said, “This project marks a decisive step towards creating a connected and efficient capital where every citizen benefits from better design and smoother travel. We are building a smarter Delhi that prioritises long-term mobility systems.”
Future Mobility Solutions
Once the DPR is approved, it will serve as the foundation for on-ground execution, with AECOM responsible for providing 3D models, technical designs, and cost estimates. The redeveloped Mahatma Gandhi Ring Road is expected to significantly reduce travel times at critical junctions such as the Hanuman Temple, ISBT and Moti Bagh.
With this initiative, the Delhi government aims to create a more connected and efficient urban transport system, ultimately benefiting all residents.
