Police launch manhunt for suspects
By Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar
A violent cult clash has rocked Akam Community in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State, leaving two dead and sparking fears of escalating violence.
The victims, simply identified as Orim and Zenge, were allegedly killed by members of another cult group in what sources identified as a reprisal attack.
The attack is said to have been carried out in retaliation for the killing of one Alobi Nsor, an alleged member of a rival cult group, earlier in July this year.
One of the victims, by the name Orim, is said to have been the mastermind of Nsor’s death and is said to have been in hiding since the incident.
“He was eventually traced to his farm plantation in the forest on Tuesday afternoon, where he and his close ally, Zenge, were ambushed and beheaded,” a source who craved anonymity said.
Residents in the area are now gripped with fear of further violence as reports indicate that a possible reprisal attack is imminent.
When contacted, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Igri Ewa, confirmed the incident.
According to him, “The incident happened in Akam community of Ikom Local Government Area.
“The State Police Commissioner, CP Rashid Afegbua, has ordered a manhunt of the perpetrators and said when apprehended, they will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
