The Cowboys waived CB Christian Matthew from injured reserve today.

    — Todd Archer (@toddarcher) September 9, 2025

The Dallas Cowboys have yet to make a move to fill the empty roster spot created on Monday, when they declared promising DT Perrion Winfrey would be out for the next month, at least, with a back injury. The UFL convert hoping to follow the footsteps of Kavontae Turpin and Brandon Aubrey was unable to make his Cowboys debut due to a back injury suffered last Monday, and the team moved him to IR meaning he’ll be out a minimum of four games.

On Monday, the team also saw two of their former players ink practice squad contracts with the Carolina Panthers. DB Israel Mukuamu, a four-year vet and former sixth-round pick, and rookie DT Tommy Akingbesote (seventh rounder), will now call Charlotte home. Another player who was trimmed from the roster before the season has also found a new home, as former RB Deuce Vaughn is in Denver, joining the Broncos practice squad.

While those players were already able to make a decision on where they wanted to land, that right is almost granted to CB Christian Matthew, who the team waived from IR on Tuesday.

Deuce Vaughn officially signed to the #Broncos practice squad today, the #ex-Cowboys draft pick getting a fresh start in Denver.

Matthew was signed during training camp, as a former player for current defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. He was waived with an injury designation during roster cutdowns, but because he wasn’t claimed, he reverted to the team’s injured reserve list. The team has reached an injury settlement with him, which allows him to receive some change before hitting the waiver wire again.

If he goes unclaimed, he’ll be free to join any team’s roster.

As for Vaughn, most are familiar with his story. The third-year running back was the feel-good moment of the 2023 draft class as his father, Chris, is a member of the Dallas front office and was able to make the call to his son to tell him he’d been drafted. The diminutive runner from Kansas State has been unable to find his way into a regular rotation though, and was released at cutdown day as the team reshaped all spots on their halfback depth chart from 2024.
