Some civic groups operating in Kano State have appealed to the Police Command in the state to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of the attack on the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The groups, which came as a coalition, also urged the police to recover assets belonging to them and the public, especially the missing bullet magazine, which were stolen by the attackers during the invasion.
They further tasked the police to ensure the safety and security of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, through increased deployment of security personnel to his palace.
A signed statement by leaders of the eight civil society groups expressed grave fear that the attack on the palace on Sunday, July 6, 2025, was yet another attempt to plunge the state into crisis and chaos.
According to the signatories, who included Mustapha Abdullahi (Kano Digital Media Rangers), Salisu Gambo (Northern Youth Assembly), Badamasi Gandu (Kano First Forum), among others, the seeming silence of the police over an attack of such magnitude was not in the public interest.
The civic groups, in their account of the incident, alleged that the palace was invaded by supporters of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, adding that properties in the palace were also destroyed during the incident.
Specifically, they alleged that a palace guard was stabbed while a number of police vehicles stationed in the palace were vandalised. They listed the vandalised security vehicles to include Police Hilux Vehicle (NPF 182D), Mopol 9, Police Hilux Vehicle (NPF 195D), and that of Mopol 52.
“Also vandalised were a motorcycle belonging to one Abdullahi Shehu (Police Officer); a motorcycle belonging to one Ibrahim Isa (Security Marshal attached to the Emirate); as well as the main iron gate of the palace,” they stated.
Meanwhile, the police in the state have confirmed that four suspects have been arrested over the incident.
Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, stressed that the State Commissioner of Police has set up a panel of officers to investigate the incident.
