🥍 Atlas win PLL title: The New York Atlas beat the Denver Outlaws, 14-13, to win their first Premier Lacrosse League title. 2024 league MVP Jeff Teat (3 goals, 3 assists) earned Championship MVP honors.
👟 Knighton banned: 21-year-old American sprinter Erriyon Knighton, a two-time world championship medalist in the 200m, was banned four years after testing positive for the steroid trenbolone. He won’t be eligible to run in the Olympics again until Brisbane 2032, when he’s 28.

Las Vegas — Terence Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) scored a stunning and unprecedented victory over Canelo Álvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) on Saturday at Allegiant Stadium, winning by unanimous decision to become the first male boxer with undisputed titles in three different weight classes.
Big day at the book: One bettor at BetMGM won $2.8 million on Crawford’s victory, wagering $2 million on the +140 underdog. Another bettor at Caesars Palace won $1 million on a $715,000 bet at the same odds, and those were just a couple of the six-figure wagers placed on Crawford.

🇱🇻 Riga, Latvia — Germany beat Turkey, 88-83, to capture their second EuroBasket title, and first since 1993. Dennis Schröder, who plays for the Kings, was named EuroBasket MVP after averaging 20.3 points and a tournament-high 7.2 assists per game.
Team of the tournament: EuroBasket’s “All-Star Five” was comprised entirely of NBA players, with Schröder (Kings) joined by teammate Franz Wagner (Magic), Turkey’s Alperen Şengün (Rockets), Greece’s Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks) and Slovenia’s Luka Dončić (Lakers).

🇯🇵 Tokyo, Japan — Melissa Jefferson-Wooden dominated the women’s 100m final at the World Athletics Championships with a time of 10.61 seconds, the fourth-fastest time ever. The 24-year-old American remains unbeaten this year in the 100m.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side… Jamaica’s Oblique Seville (9.77 seconds) picked up a surprising win over countryman Kishane Thompson (9.82) and Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles (9.89). Seville is the first Jamaican man to win 100m gold at worlds since Usain Bolt in 2015.

🇪🇸 Madrid, Spain — The final stage of the Vuelta a España was canceled on Sunday after pro-Palestinian protesters repeatedly disrupted the race and entered the course near the finish line. Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France champion, was declared the winner.

Vingegaard: “People are protesting for a reason,” the champ said after the race. “It’s unfortunate that the protests are taking place during the race, and nearly all riders agree on that, but these people are desperate to find a way to be heard.”
🏈 AP poll, Week 4

The bottom half of the AP poll got a big shake-up this week after a handful of upsets across the country.

No. 24 Notre Dame dropped 16 spots after their last-second loss to Texas A&M but stayed in the poll, making them the first ranked 0-2 team since 1988. The Fighting Irish’s two losses have come by a combined four points against two current top-10 teams.

No. 20 Vanderbilt has its highest ranking since 2008 after blowing out South Carolina on the road, 31-7. The Gamecocks, like their Palmetto State neighbors Clemson, also tumbled out of the poll after the loss.
Elsewhere: Georgia moved into the top five after outlasting Tennessee, 44-41 (OT), for their ninth straight win over the Vols … Texas fell one spot to No. 8 after an easy win over UTEP (but another ugly outing from Arch Manning) … Miami moved up one spot to No. 4 after drubbing USF.
