In a poetic coda to last year’s hedonistic Brat summer, pop star Charli XCX and The 1975’s George Daniel were married over the weekend in an intimate ceremony at London’s Hackney Town Hall. Following their vows, the musician couple posed for photos on the steps outside, where they were greeted by guests, paparazzi, and a flurry of confetti.
Charli looked very much like herself in a Vivienne Westwood corseted minidress and her trademark wraparound shades. Daniel matched his bride’s relaxed vibe in a slouchy double-breasted Armani suit and a pale gray silk shirt that he wore sans necktie. He also kept his accessories to a minimum, opting for simple John Lobb shoes, a floral boutonniere, and his go-to pair of thin chain necklaces, which peeked through the open collar of his shirt.
As The 1975’s longtime drummer (who also produced several songs on Charli XCX’s Brat), Daniel has forayed into the world of fine suiting several times before. But at his own wedding, he pulled off a tricky feat for any groom: Like Charli, he looked like himself—if just a tad nicer. As my British GQ colleague Mahalia Chang put it, there’s a certain cool factor to Daniel wearing “a very nice suit that was styled casually, not a casual suit masquerading as a nice one.” While Charli’s 2024 ode to all-night partying had dudes dressing sluttier in its wake, her rock-star partner managed to look both put-together and ready for a big, celebratory night out.
And celebrate they did: After the ceremony, the wedding party walked on foot through the couple’s East London neighborhood to a post-nuptials reception at the hip Italian spot Dalla, where Charli and George sipped cocktails and smoked cigarettes on the sidewalk outside amidst a backdrop of (characteristically green) Lime bikes. For the afters at the Dalston bar Ellie’s, the newlyweds did a late-night outfit change: a flouncy Saint Laurent minidress for Charli, and a silky, charcoal-gray Armani shirt and navy trousers for Daniel.
On Instagram, the stylist Patti Villirillo, who dressed Daniel for the weekend, shared a post from the popular account @Cigfluencers: A photo of the bride and groom sitting outside Dalla, smiling giddily with cigarettes in hand. The caption read, “This is my royal wedding.”
