The New York Jets entered the offseason searching for a cornerback to play opposite Sauce Gardner. New GM Darren Mougey signed Brandon Stephens to a three-year contract worth $36 million. Through two practices, Stephens has made a quick impression at Florham Park.
Head coach Aaron Glenn has been impressed.
“I thought he had a really good day and I was proud of him,” Glenn said after practice. “He really stood out as far as coverage today. I’m excited about [the] player.”
Stephens reciprocated the feeling, crediting Glenn for being one of the reasons he signed with the Jets in free agency. “That’s one of the reasons I came here, to learn from guys like AG [Aaron Glenn],” Stephens said. “Guys who have been in my shoes, [coaches] who have succeeded in this league. It’s been great.”
Stephens has been sticky in coverage through two practices with a few pass breakups. Stephens struggled with the Baltimore Ravens last season, allowing 65 receptions and a passer rating allowed of 107.4, per Pro Football Focus. He’s attempting to enjoy a bounce-back season under Coach Glenn, a defensive-minded leader.
Stephens’ form at training camp is worth monitoring after he was one of the Jets’ biggest offseason acquisitions. Finding an appropriate running mate for Gardner has been a previous issue. Stephens is off to a good start.
