    From Godwin Tsa Abuja

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has revealed how the late former president, Muhammadu Buhari, for the love of country,  traveled to France as a witness before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Paris, France, in connection with the $2.3 billion arbitration proceedings instituted against Nigeria by Sunrise Power over the Mambilla hydroelectric power project.

The arbitration case was filed by the company and Chief Leno Adesanya against Nigeria, over alleged breach of contract by the Federal Government in the $6 billion Mambilla Hydroelectric power contract deal.

The AGF noted that the actions of the late former President was a clear demonstration of his unwavering love and personal sacrifice for his country, even after his retirement.

This is contained in his tribute to the late former President wherein, he expressed deep sorrow over his  death in London.

He described his death as a  monumental national loss and the end of an era defined by uncommon discipline, personal sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to the ideals of national transformation.

The minister added his passing marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political and moral history, as he will be remembered with profound respect for his unwavering dedication to God and country- “a man of austere values, gentle, strength, unyielding integrity and a life define by principled service in the quest for national transformation.

The AGF recalled that “as President, the late Muhammadu Buhari made significant strides in strengthening the administration of justice and advancing law reforms.

“His tenure witnessed the enactment of landmark status, bold policy initiatives, and far-reaching institutional reforms. These included the modernization of Correctional services, policing, anti-money laundering frameworks, asset recovery systems, federalism through the devolution of powers, electoral reforms and the deepening of good governance.”

Fagbemi revealed that it was under his leadership that Nigeria initiated the successful challenge of the $11 billion P&ID arbitral award.

“That bold and strategic effort was steadfastly carried forward by President Bola Tinubu, ultimately enabling our nation to avert a crippling financial burden.

“Even in retirement, his unwavering sense of duty to the nation never diminished. I vividly recalled visiting him both in London and Daura when his support was once again sought to help Nigeria confront another predatory claim- this time, concerning the Mambilla Hydroelectric power project.

“Despite the demands of age and the comfort of private life, former President Buhari selflessly agreed to serve as a witness. In January 2025, he traveled to Paris and stood before the tribunal, bearing testimony for the country he loved with rare and steadfast conviction,” Fagbemi wrote.
