San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that quarterback Brock Purdy was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday while recovering from a toe injury, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Purdy suffered the injury in Week 1 and missed San Francisco’s 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.
A potential return against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 would be an encouraging development for Purdy, as he was reportedly expected to miss between two and five weeks with the toe issue.
He appeared to be making progress in his recovery at a faster rate than expected, though.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the 49ers weren’t optimistic about Purdy returning against the Cardinals, but a Week 3 comeback was “not out of the question.”
The signal-caller has been relatively healthy since taking over under center for San Francisco, starting in 31 of a possible 34 regular-season contests across the past two years. One missed game was also due to rest purposes to end the 2023 season.
Purdy is coming off a 2024 campaign in which he completed 65.9 percent of his throws for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions in 15 appearances.
To open this season, he threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns while tossing a pair of interceptions during the 49ers’ 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. He also posted a 74.3 completion percentage.
San Francisco could take a cautious approach with Purdy’s rehab despite a return to practice, especially considering backup Mac Jones’ success when filling in against New Orleans.
Jones finished 26-of-39 for 279 yards and three touchdowns without getting picked off in the victory.
