The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken an early lead in the local government elections held across Lagos State, as initial results continue to trickle in from various polling units within the state’s 57 local government areas and local council development areas.
Voting officially ended at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, with sorting and counting of ballots immediately following in most wards.
Preliminary reports from the field indicate that the APC is leading in a significant number of councils, reinforcing its stronghold in the state’s political landscape.
Election observers and party agents at various polling units have reported similar trends, noting that APC candidates are ahead in several key areas, including Lagos Island, Mainland, Surulere, Ikeja, Eti-Osa, Ikorodu, and Agege, among others.
However, final and official results are still being awaited from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
Despite the apparent early advantage for the APC, the elections were marked by a noticeably low voter turnout.
Across many polling units, turnout was far below expectations, with some locations recording fewer than 70 voters.
Election officials and civil society groups have expressed concern over the widespread voter apathy, attributing it to a range of factors, including voter fatigue, lack of confidence in the electoral process, and poor voter education.
As counting continues, stakeholders await official confirmation from LASIEC, which is expected to release the full results once collation is completed across all councils.
Security agencies reported a relatively peaceful exercise, with only a few isolated cases of logistical delays and minor disputes at some polling units.
