Japanese automaker Nissan will recall approximately 173,301 vehicles in the United States after regulators discovered a potential defect in the vehicles’ fuel pump systems, according to a notification from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday.
The NHTSA stated that affected vehicles may experience fuel pump failure due to manufacturing inconsistencies that could cause the pump to short-circuit, leading to an engine stall while driving. This can increase the risk of a crash, particularly at higher speeds or in congested traffic conditions.
The recall, which includes certain Nissan NV200 and NV200 Taxi models, will see the company notify vehicle owners and replace the faulty components at no cost. Nissan said it will work with dealers across the country to expedite the inspection and repair process.
Safety Regulators Cite Broader Recall Trend Across Automakers
The NHTSA’s report comes amid a surge in nationwide automotive recalls addressing safety defects across multiple manufacturers. In a separate filing on the same day, Stellantis recalled nearly 298,439 Dodge Dart vehicles over a shifter cable defect that could disable the park function, raising the risk of unintended rollaway incidents.
Similarly, Hyundai Motor is recalling more than 135,000 Santa Fe SUVs produced between December 2023 and July 2025, due to a starter motor cover installation issue that could cause an electrical short and potential fire risk. The affected vehicles are primarily equipped with 2.5-litre turbocharged engines and assembled in Alabama.
The NHTSA also announced a recall of 145,000 BMW vehicles after the company identified a starter overheating issue in certain 2020 340i, X5, and X7 models, while Toyota has recalled nearly 400,000 vehicles, including 2022–2025 Tundras and 2023–2025 Sequoia hybrids, over malfunctioning rearview cameras.
Nissan Reassures Customers; Repairs to Be Free of Charge
Nissan emphasised that all repairs under the recall will be carried out free of cost, and customers can verify if their vehicle is affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the official Nissan recall portal or the NHTSA website.
The company said it is working “closely with federal safety authorities” to ensure prompt corrective action, reaffirming its “commitment to the safety and satisfaction of all Nissan owners.”
