Mumbai Weather: Mumbai is currently getting light rain, but there’s no danger of heavy rainfall, and the weather is expected to stay calm in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially announced on Friday that the monsoon has now ended. This year, the monsoon arrived early on May 26 and ended early too—on October 10, the earliest end since 2018, said media reports.
Usually, the monsoon leaves between October 10 and 15, but in recent years, this has been very unpredictable. For example, the earliest it ended was on September 30 in 2002, and the latest was on October 28 in 2020. In the last three years, it ended around mid to late October, reported Hindustan Times.
Although Colaba (south Mumbai) got less rain than expected on most days, it saw very heavy rain between June 16–21 and September 24–29. Santacruz (suburban Mumbai), on the other hand, got much more rain than usual from August to September. Overall, both places received more rain than their usual averages.
- Santacruz normally gets around 2318.8 mm of rain, but this year it received 3112 mm — about 34% more.
- Colaba usually gets 2,094 mm of rain but ended up with about 2,263 mm — 8% more than normal.
This monsoon, Mumbai had five days with very heavy rain (more than 100 mm in a day). Bikram Singh, the new head of IMD Mumbai, said that monsoon withdrawal was slightly delayed in Maharashtra due to some weather changes, but this is quite normal. Still, it’s the earliest withdrawal of the monsoon since 2018, the report added.
Even though the monsoon has ended, weather expert Rajesh Kapadia mentioned that Mumbai might still see some light rain before Diwali.
