At least six people were shot after an unidentified man fired shot Sunday morning at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, according to local media. Their conditions are currently unknown. The incident was reported just before 11 a.m. (local time) at the church on McCandlish Road.
In a statement, the Grand Blanc Township Police Department in Michigan confirmed that the “shooter is down and there is no active threat”. Police, however, have not released details on the suspected shooter or the victims yet.
Police are expected to provide an update between 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m, FOX 2 reported.
The church Videos on social media showed a massive plume of smoke over the church.
“There was just an active shooting at a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, with several victims reported. Police confirm that the shooter is DOWN, and the threat is neutralized. The church is actively burning. This is evil. Pray for everybody’s safety,” a reporter from the scene posted on X.
The incident comes a day after Russell M. Nelson, the oldest president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away at 101. Church spokesperson Candice Madsen said in a statement that Nelson died at his home in Salt Lake City. He was the oldest-ever president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and spent four decades in the highest levels of church leadership.
His tenure included significant changes, such as a shift away from the terms “Mormon” and “LDS” and a more welcoming stance towards LGBTQ+ individuals, despite maintaining traditional views on marriage. He also faced scrutiny over the church’s handling of sexual abuse reports.
