Ethan Brookes’s crucial innings of 57 helped Worcestershire to a thrilling three-wicket win on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method over Hampshire to win the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
It was the Pears’ first one-day trophy since 1994 and after Brookes fell from his 34-ball innings with just 10 deliveries remaining, Matthew Waite got Worcestershire within striking distance with two big sixes.
And with four needed off three deliveries, Henry Cullen launched a shot towards the boundary where Kyle Abbott took the catch but the momentum saw him touch the rope before he could release the ball to signal celebrations in the Worcestershire dressing room.
Brookes had hit four sixes and five other boundaries in his explosive innings to get Worcestershire in with a chance of winning as the run rate was creeping up towards two runs a ball.
Ali Orr’s well-paced 110 helped Hampshire to a total of 237 for seven before the weather saw Worcestershire set a revised target of 188 in 27 overs.
Scott Currie’s five for 34 kept Hampshire on top for the majority of the innings but, a week after their T20 Blast final defeat to Somerset, they suffered more heartbreak as Worcestershire’s big-hitting lower order got them over the line.
