Wolf spiders are spiders in the Lycosidae family that may bite humans when they feel threatened or in danger. A wolf spider bite is not life-threatening, but it may cause mild and uncomfortable symptoms.

While a wolf spider may look intimidating, its bite is not poisonous and doesn’t typically cause serious symptoms. A wolf spider bite may cause:

    • A red bump
    • Swelling
    • Itching
    • Discomfort or mild pain

Symptoms from wolf spider bites usually resolve on their own.

While uncommon, it’s possible to have an allergic reaction to an insect bite. You may be allergic to a wolf spider bite if you experience any of the following symptoms after being bitten:

    • Hives
    • Facial swelling
    • Trouble breathing
    • Dizziness
    • Weakness
    • Fainting

Wolf spiders usually hide from humans and don’t bite unless they feel trapped or threatened. If you accidentally touch a wolf spider, it may bite you.

You may be more likely to come in contact with a wolf spider when they hunt for food during the day. Wolf spiders prefer dark hiding places like piles of leaves or fallen logs. In a home, they may choose to stay in closets, garages, or basements.

Symptoms are caused by a reaction to the mechanical bite rather than venom from the spider.

A wolf spider bite can be difficult to distinguish from other insect bites. Unless you saw the spider bite you, you may not be able to determine which type of bite it is.

If you seek medical care for your bite wound, your healthcare provider will examine the area and look for any signs of allergic reaction or venom poisoning.

Most wolf spider bites are mild and don’t require medical attention. The goal of treatment is to care for the small wound, manage any pain, and avoid potential infection.

Plan to care for your bite as you would other mild insect bites: First, clean the area with gentle soap and warm water. Then, cover the area with a bandage to prevent infection.

For itching or discomfort, consider the following over-the-counter treatments:

    • An ice pack for swelling and redness
    • Antihistamines, such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine), for itching
    • Pain medications, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), for mild pain or discomfort

The most effective way to help prevent a spider bite is to avoid contact with spiders whenever possible. If you notice a wolf spider in your home, try to relocate it outside. To lower the chances of a wolf spider living in your home, avoid clutter, such as piles of clothing or cardboard boxes. Wolf spiders like to seek out dark, hidden places.

If you see a wolf spider outdoors, keep your distance, and it will likely avoid you.

While the thought of seeing wolf spiders in or near your home can be concerning, remember that these spiders are usually harmless. Wolf spiders also eat other insects and are beneficial for the environment.

A wolf spider bite may become infected. Signs of infection may include:

    • Swelling
    • Redness or a red streak coming from the bite
    • Pus
    • Fever
    • Nausea
    • Worsening pain

If you think that you have a spider bite that’s become infected, contact a doctor, who may prescribe antibiotics.

Wolf spiders are large, hairy spiders that live in dark, hidden spaces. They usually avoid humans but may bite if you touch them.

Wolf spider bites are not poisonous and won’t cause sores or body-wide symptoms from its venom. A wolf spider bite may cause mild symptoms, such as redness, swelling, temporary pain, and itching. If you develop any signs of an allergic reaction or infection, seek immediate medical attention.
