Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged. The megastar couple shared the news on Tuesday in a joint Instagram post, which featured a series of photos showing their proposal in a wooded garden. The post was captioned, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
And what do gym teachers (and professional athletes) love to wear? That’s right: shorts. Per the photos, Kelce proposed in khaki shorts, a navy cable-knit shirt, and dark brown suede loafers worn sans socks. Swift, meanwhile, wore a Ralph Lauren cotton striped dress, Louis Vuitton brown leather heeled sandals, and her trusty diamond-encrusted Cartier Santos Demoiselle watch—which just so happened to match her new rectangle-cut diamond engagement ring.

While we here at GQ HQ have debated the etiquette of wearing (or not wearing) shorts to the office, while out at night, or literally at all, we’ve never once considered the circumstance of showing off your legs while proposing marriage. But the heart wants what it wants.
Speaking about his relationship with Swift in his September GQ cover story, Kelce said, “I hadn’t experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions. That was very relatable, seeing how exhausted she would get after shows. She may not think of herself as an athlete. She will never tell anyone that she is an athlete. But I’ve seen what she goes through. I’ve seen the amount of work that she puts on her body, and it’s mind-blowing.”

He added, “People gravitate towards how she performs and how she makes it feel like the entire stadium is in this little room with her. She is so good at mesmerizing everybody and making everybody feel like it’s an intimate situation. I think that alone—there is so much calm and coolness. She’s beautiful. She’s up there making everyone feel at ease.”
And nothing says “feeling at ease” more than proposing to the most famous pop star on Earth with your bare calves out.
