The African football community is mourning the death of Razak Omotoyossi, the prolific striker who rose to legendary status with the Benin Republic national team.

He passed away on Tuesday morning in Benin, aged 38.

Though born in Nigeria, Omotoyossi became the embodiment of Beninese football, his career symbolizing resilience, loyalty, and the unifying power of the game.

He etched his name into history as the first Beninese player to score in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and was the face of Benin’s golden generation.

His most unforgettable performance came during the 2008 AFCON qualifiers when he scored all four goals in Benin’s stunning 4–1 victory over Togo.

That feat not only secured a famous win but also made him joint-top scorer of the qualifying campaign, alongside African greats such as Samuel Eto’o.

Omotoyossi’s club career was equally remarkable. After starting out in Nigeria, he embarked on a globe-trotting journey that took him to Sweden, where he starred for Helsingborgs IF, winning the Allsvenskan title and featuring in the UEFA Champions League.

He later played in France with FC Metz and had spells in South Africa, Syria, Libya, and Moldova.

His blistering pace, powerful finishing, and relentless drive made him a fan favorite wherever he went.

Beyond the goals, Omotoyossi was an inspiration.

His choice to represent Benin, the country that gave him international recognition, over his birth nation of Nigeria, reflected his gratitude and deep connection to his adopted homeland.

To many, he was more than just a footballer he was a symbol of hope, pride, and possibility for young Beninese players.

The Benin Football Federation is expected to release an official statement in due course. For now, fans and former teammates across Africa remember him not just as a record-breaking striker but as a national hero whose legacy will live on.
