The Sokoto State government said it would continue to prioritise the power sector by ensuring stable electricity for the economic benefit of its residents across the state.
The State Commissioner for Energy and Petroleum Resources, Hon Sanusi Danfulani, gave the assurance after inspecting the completed electricity restoration project at Durbawa community in Kware Local Government Area of the state.
The community had, hitherto, been in darkness for nearly a year. Danfulani said the move to reconnect the area was aimed at restoring power supply, stimulating economic growth, and enhancing the social well-being of the residents in the community.
He said the governor had, in a strategic move to improve electricity access, taken significant steps to revitalise the State Independent Power Plant.
Danfulani revealed that the power plant—an initiative critical to stable electricity supply—was being fast-tracked to support industrial and commercial growth.
The commissioner added that the plant has reached 80 per cent completion. He, however, clarified that the state is not partnering with the federal government on the IPP, contrary to speculation.
“The whole project is being sponsored by the state government. There is no partnership yet.”
Earlier, he had visited the Sokoto State House of Assembly in response to an invitation from the House Committee on Power.
Danfulani noted that he missed the lawmakers’ invitation because they came to the ministry when he was attending the State Executive Council meeting with the state governor.
“The issue has been finally resolved,” he said. “At the time the committee visited the ministry, I was attending a State Executive Council meeting with His Excellency Ahmed Aliyu, the Executive Governor of Sokoto State.
“Now that I have appeared before them and explained the miscommunication and what led to my absence, both the Speaker and committee members have acknowledged the reason.”
He assured that he will continue to foster working relations with the legislative arm of government for the development of the state.
