From Fred Ezeh, Abuja
There was a little confusion on Friday regarding the status of the nationwide strike embarked upon by the nurses under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, had earlier in the day announced that the nurses had called off the strike, but a few minutes after that the leadership of NANNM announced that the statement from the Minister was incorrect, adding that no decision had been taken on ending the strike.
Rilwan Olajide, National Chairman of FHI NANNM, said the decision to call off the strike or continue wouldl be taken at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that might take place this weekend.
Meanwhile, there are indications that certain promises have been made to the nurses by the federal government, and they might consider calling off the nationwide strike before the weekend runs off.
Similarly, the Minister of Health told State House Correspondents in Abuja, on Thursday, that some monies have been approved by the President, and the Ministries of Health and Finance, as well as the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation are working on how to expedite action on the release.
