    From Tony Osauzo, Benin

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has vowed that his administration will not relent in the fight against cultism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities until the state is safe for all residents.

The Governor made this statement after a closed-door meeting with commanders and leaders of the Special Security Squad on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the Government House in Benin City.

On the outcome of the meeting, Okpebholo disclosed that it was successful, as attendees strategised on intensifying the crackdown on cultism and kidnapping in Edo State.

“We had a very useful meeting that concerns the fight against cultism and kidnapping. We want to see that Edo State is safe for all of us, and we are able to drive a strong economy. This is the reason for today’s meeting,” he explained.

Since the inauguration of the Special Security Squad, named “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists,” calmness has returned to the state, with several arrests made during a series of raids. The squad, established on July 11, 2025, comprises operatives from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), hunters, vigilante groups, and repentant cultists, among other critical stakeholders in Edo State.

The squad has identified and raided hotspots, making significant arrests of suspects and leaders of cult groups, restoring relative peace to troubled areas, particularly in Benin City. Notable raid locations include Isiohor, Iguosa, Oluku, Ibiwe/Lagos Street, Obe Community, Iyowa Community, Evbonika, and Azuwa village, with over 20 arrests made on July 15, 2025, alone.

Governor Okpebholo, his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Umar Musa Ikhilor; an Executive Member of the Edo State Special Security Squad, Comrade Ameloemen Idemudia Noah; and other key figures attended the security meeting.
