Bennett is by no means a lock to make the team as the No. 3 quarterback
The start of training camp for the Los Angeles Rams is right around the corner, with all players reporting to Loyola Marymount University on July 22 and practices beginning two days later. Leading up to camp, we’re previewing the Rams’ roster by looking at each position group to find roster locks, bubble players, potential sleepers and more.
First up is the quarterback room, which is once again led by Matthew Stafford. After signing a new deal with the Rams this offseason, Stafford ensures he’ll be back in L.A. for at least one more year. Jimmy Garoppolo also re-signed with the Rams, remaining the backup for a second season.
There aren’t many questions with this group, but one thing does need to be answered: Will Stetson Bennett make the team again?
Roster locks
- Matthew Stafford
- Jimmy Garoppolo
There’s no doubt Stafford and Garoppolo will be the top two quarterbacks again this year after the Rams signed both of them to new deals. Garoppolo got $4.5 million guaranteed with an additional $9 million available to earn through incentives, so the Rams aren’t cutting him.
It’s a nice tandem to have in the locker room, too. With both players being veterans, they can coach up younger guys on offense, as well as the other quarterbacks in camp.
Likely to make it
It’s hard to say the other two quarterbacks behind Stafford and Garoppolo are likely to make the team because there’s a chance both of them will be cut. Bennett has work to do and Dresser Winn is mostly a camp arm who can back up Bennett in the preseason.
On the bubble
- Stetson Bennett
- Dresser Winn
Bennett has made the 53-man roster in each of the last two years, though he stepped away from the team as a rookie in 2023 before returning last season. He hasn’t been particularly impressive in his first two years with the Rams but as a former fourth-round pick, Los Angeles may not be ready to move on just yet.
If he continues to struggle in the preseason the way he did last year, it’s hard to see him making the regular-season roster. He has to show signs of improvement in practice and games this summer.
Position battle to watch
It’s plausible to say Bennett vs. Winn will be a camp battle to watch but with both players closer to being on the outside looking in, it’s not much of a competition. Plus, Bennett has a clear edge in terms of his standing with the team; Winn was just signed this summer as a camp arm.
Potential sleeper
No sleepers here. Everything is pretty plain to see with the quarterbacks. Stafford is the starter, Garoppolo is the backup and both Bennett and Winn are on the fringe of the roster.
