Dana White discussed what’s next for Stephen Thompson after he suffered his third-straight loss at UFC on ESPN 70.
Thompson (17-9-1 MMA, 12-9-1 UFC) lost a controversial split decision to Gabriel Bonfim (18-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) in Saturday’s co-main event at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
Prior to the fight, 42-year-old Thompson revealed to MMA Junkie that he had two fights left on his contract and would like to remain a UFC fighter. As for his fighting future, UFC CEO White thinks “Wonderboy” can still compete at a high level.
“I don’t know – that’s up to him,” White said during the UFC on ESPN 70 post-fight press conference. “Yeah, (I would like to see him continue fighting). He looked great tonight. ‘Wonderboy’ looked great tonight. For a guy who is a traditional martial artist, kickboxer, does a damn good job staying off the ground and defending the takedown and staying out of submissions. He’s one of the nicest human beings on the planet.”
The former two-time welterweight title challenger left the fight in crutches after having his left shin “split to the bone” during the fight. He has now lost five of his past six bouts.
