There was also an impressive win for British number 10 Paul Jubb, who saw off 19th seed Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3 6-2.

Jubb broke Tirante’s serve five times as he aims for a fifth appearance at SW19 – and the chance to make it past the first round proper for the first time.

British number 11 Ryan Peniston is also through, beating Facundo Bagnis of Argentina 6-3 6-1 to set up a meeting with Spain’s Martin Landaluce .

Also through is Hamish Stewart, who saved a match point before opponent Valentin Vacherot of Monaco retired with injury.

Stewart trailed 6-4 6-5 when Vacherot ended the match early.

Oliver Bonding was the fifth and final British man to win on Monday, battling past Norway’s Viktor Durasovic 7-5 2-6 6-4.

Jan Choinski, who had reached the main draw in each of the last two years, lost 3-6 6-4 6-3 to Estonia’s Mark Lajal.

Giles Hussey went down in three sets to Denmark’s August Holmgren, while James Story fell 6-0 6-2 to Chilean fifth seed Tomas Barrios Vera.
