Mark Walter owns the Dodgers. One of the biggest spenders in baseball. I’d imagine this is a good thing for the future of the Lakers too. Deep pockets in LA now for the Luka Doncic era.

    — Kevin O’Connor (@KevinOConnorNBA) June 18, 2025

A piece of monumental news hit the NBA on Wednesday afternoon when it was announced that the Buss family had agreed to sell a majority stake of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, who is the CEO of TWG Global and Guggenheim Partners. The franchise will reportedly be sold for a valuation of $10 billion, making this the biggest sale of a pro sports franchise anywhere in the world.

There have been numerous Lakers fans who have long wanted the Buss family to sell the team. Dr. Jerry Buss bought it in 1979, and after he passed away in 2013, his daughter Jeanie took control as its governor, a role she has held ever since. While the Lakers won 10 NBA championships under the elder Buss, the results under the younger Buss haven’t exactly been as stellar.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), fans reacted to the huge news.

Lakers and Celtics being sold in the same year…what is happening???

That’s a great move. Mark Walter is an incredible owner.

I never thought I’d see the day the Lakers wold be sold

    — Jeff Lightsy Jr. (@jlightsy7) June 18, 2025

NBA forced the Mavericks to trade Luka to the Lakers so they’d sell for a ton instead of having a retired LeBron and an injury prone 34 year old AD, it’s all connected 💔

Jerry Buss didn’t just buy a team—he printed legacy.

    $67.5M → $10B
    That’s 147× your money.
12.4% compounded every year for 46 straight.

    Outpaced hedge funds.
Won 11 rings along the way.
    That’s not ROI. That’s icon status. 🐐🏆

Good hopefully he gets rid of that fraud Lebron

    — TheTruth (@Thetruth8240) June 18, 2025

Mark Cuban thought he was gonna remain in control too. I’m sure in a few years Jeanie will have some nice seats but will have little input on what goes on.

    — CoolHandMe (@CoolHandMe33) June 18, 2025

This is what I’ve been calling for years now! This is one of the greatest sports franchises in the world and needs the proper ownership to navigate the CBA and the new NBA. Hiring the most talented verses family oriented, keep it in house, style we’ve seen over the past two…

    — Wes Brown (@CryptoTalkWB) June 18, 2025

This is a blessing. If you know how well the Dodgers are run. The #Lakers will become the best franchise in 🏀 again. They will top to bottom have a culture change for the best. They will invest in making the entire Lakers experience second to none.
