Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has stated that democracy has moved beyond an ideal to the foundation on which Nigerians access quality public services, infrastructure, and economic opportunity.
The governor stated this in a Democracy Day message marking Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule. He emphasised that the transformation achieved in Gombe State is a direct testament to the enduring potential of democratic governance.
Governor Yahaya, in the message which was issued by his senior media aide, Ismail Uba Misilli, added that when anchored on transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, democracy is more than a political system; it is a delivery mechanism for real development.
“Our progress across infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and youth empowerment demonstrates how democracy, when properly managed, translates into human capital advancement and economic growth,” the governor stated.
Citing the Network 11-100 road project, DEVAGOM economic blueprint, and environmental renewal programmes as part of milestone initiatives achieved by his administration, he described Gombe as a model of democratic success and one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing subnational economies.
He said, “From a modest beginning, Gombe has emerged as a development exemplar not by chance, but through sustained democratic practices, strategic policy implementation, and the resilience of our people.”
Governor Yahaya also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centric governance. He highlighted institutional reforms across sectors, describing them as critical enablers of service delivery and social equity.
Speaking further, Governor Yahaya acknowledged the challenges confronting Nigeria’s democratic evolution; however, he maintained that the country’s 26-year unbroken democratic journey remains a continental milestone.
“As the largest democracy in Africa, Nigeria continues to uphold democratic principles in the face of economic and security headwinds. Our ability to conduct credible elections and transition power peacefully is a sign of democratic maturity,” he stated as he congratulated President Tinubu, democratic institutions, and other champions of democracy across the country, commending their sacrifices and dedication to democratic consolidation.
